None of these can be ruled out with any great confidence, so only a tentative nod goes to BUGISE SEAGULL. He looked one to keep on the right side of when scoring comfortably on his first two starts last season, before going on to finish third in Listed and Grade 1 events at Huntingdon and Aintree. Having performed well in a point-to-point before joining this yard, he looks the one to side with tackling fences for the first time. Johnnywho was last seen finishing a respectable fourth in a valuable handicap over the extended 3m at Aintree in April and this course winner looks the biggest threat. That said, Cherie D'am was third in the Grade 1 Sefton Novices' Hurdle at that same Grand National meeting and she must be respected on her chasing bow.

All of these look likely to do well over fences and JOHNNYWHO, who opened his account over hurdles first time up here last season, is fancied to do the same on his chase debut.

Top of the list is point runner-up BUGISE SEAGULL, who enjoyed a promising novice hurdle campaign at about this trip.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

Geezer Rockstar shaped with promise last season and, after being readily outclassed in a warm Sandown handicap over 2m when last seen, he should appreciate this drop in class. That said, KING ROLY edges preference. He arrives on a hat-trick after scoring gamely over 2m7f at Worcester last month and, dropping in trip with match-fitness on his side, he gets the vote. Barlovento is a fascinating contender on his hurdles debut having scored cosily in a Southwell bumper in the spring.

BARLOVENTO confirmed his debut promise when off the mark in a bumper at Southwell 7 months ago and is very much bred to take to this discipline, so he's marginally preferred to Geezer Rock, who sets a good standard. Sea God is open to improvement and also worthy of consideration.

It was a useful maiden hurdle that GEEZER ROCKSTAR won at Ascot in March and that form makes him the one to beat today.

Impressive point-to-point winner ILLICO DE COTTE showed a fair level of form over hurdles last season and he may prove to be even better over fences. Now making his first start since wind surgery, Dan Skelton's charge gets the nod to return to winning ways. With plenty of chasing experience already under his belt, Ballydisco looks the pick of the remainder off 4lb higher than when finishing an excellent second over 3m4f at Ffos Las in May. Elleon can also go well.

BALLYDISCO ended his time with his former stable with his best effort to date over fences when runner-up at Ffos Las back in May and, with his hurdles form offering hope he can be competitive from his revised mark, he could well be the way to go on debut for Lucinda Russell. Chase debutant Illico de Cotte needs considering, with in-form 9-y-o Elleon another fancied to be thereabouts.

The lightly raced point winner ILLICO DE COTTE is open to improvement on his chase debut and earns the vote ahead of Elleon.

A mark of 107 does not look beyond Don Virginia, who was just touched off in a novice at Warwick three weeks ago. That said, previous C&D winner EIRE STREET was last seen finishing second in a competitive class 2 event at Kelso in April and he makes greater appeal. The son of Flemensfirth, two from three in handicap company, is 4lb higher on his seasonal reappearance and is expected to go very close. Others to note include Parvos and Wise Guy.

A competitive handicap. WISE GUY progressed well in handicaps last term, including a C&D win, and appeals as one who can kick on again this season. Dan Skelton's Don Hollow could pose a threat if a wind operation in the off-season has had a positive effect. To Chase A Dream, Eire Street and Don Virginia are others who arrive with positive profiles.

5yo WISE GUY (nap) enjoyed a productive novice campaign last season, including a comfortable C&D win, and he can make a winning return.

Four from four and raised a total of 29lb since switching to handicaps in March, Plaisir Des Flos will be a real threat if returning at the top of his game. Even so, the Dan Skelton-trained MR HOPE STREET might prove too strong. The Jet Away gelding benefitted from a step up in trip when winning over an extended 2m4f at Market Rasen in April before following up at Uttoxeter the following month, being eased down towards the finish. He's 5lb higher but might still be improving. The race-fit Broughshane is also taken seriously.

PLAISIR DES FLOS improved in leaps and bounds when switched to handicaps last season and, with the likelihood of even better to come from this unexposed 5-y-o, he is taken to pick up where he left off by making a winning seasonal reappearance here. Broughshane and the hat-trick seeking Mr Hope Street rate the main dangers in that order of preference.

The Dan Skelton-trained MR HOPE STREET won his last two starts in the spring and this unexposed 6yo can complete a hat-trick.

ONE EYE ON VEGAS showed up well for a long way in a 0-125 over an extended 3m at Ayr when last seen in April and, eased in both trip and grade, the lightly-raced gelding could resume his progress on this seasonal return. Got Your Back offered encouragement on his handicap bow at Market Rasen having undergone wind surgery prior and any further improvement would bring him into the reckoning. Famous Liss is another worth considering for the in-form Stuart Coltherd team.

DOMINIC'S FAULT evidently hasn't been the easiest to train but there was plenty of encouragement to take from his hurdles exploits upon returning from a lengthy break earlier this year and, remaining with potential, he's taken to make an immediate impact now handicapping. One Eye On Vegas and Got Your Back are interesting alternatives.

Cheekpieces prompted improvement from ONE EYE ON VEGAS earlier this year and he is selected to make a winning return to action.

FORTUNATE MAN and The Flier Begley come into this on the back of winning efforts. The latter kept on well to score over this trip at Warwick three weeks ago and is noteworthy off just 2lb higher. Nevertheless, the selection's novice hurdle success in March was really encouraging and the son of Solider Of Fortune has greater potential to flourish now he switches to chasing. Peejaybee can also get competitive.

The most interesting of these is FORTUNATE MAN, who showed plenty over hurdles last season and this former point winner is likely to be seen in an even better light now switched to the larger obstacles. Rock of Star will be a threat if raring to go on debut for a new yard following 9 months off and he is second choice ahead of last-time-out winners The Flier Begley, Peejaybee and Indian Louis.

Topweight FORTUNATE MAN was a promising novice hurdler last season and connections are evidently keen to launch his chasing career.
Ths is the racecard key.
