14:03 Southwell Handicap Chase (Class 4) 24f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

FINN LOUGH made amends for a disappointing effort when getting his head back in front over C&D at the start of last month and the consistent six-year-old doesn't appear to have finished his progression just yet. The dry forecast is likely to suit Always Busy after being pulled up on heavy ground at Lingfield in January, while Jeffery's Cross is worth another chance following his latest effort.

AWAYTHELAD got back on track in a change of headgear when second at Doncaster and looks capable of going one better off his current mark. Shillanavogy is worth another chance back on better ground so is next best ahead of last-time-out winner Finn Lough.

The vote goes to FINN LOUGH (nap) who could have more to offer in the retained cheekpieces. Awaythelad is second choice.

14:37 Southwell Handicap Chase (Class 5) 16f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

WE GOT YOUR BACK had been a revelation when dropped to the minimum distance with a brace of victories at Leicester and Catterick before the wheels fell off back at 2m4f when returning to the former venue. Laura Morgan's gelding deserves another chance to get his head back in front, despite being 6lb higher than his most recent success. Sangiovese won on handicap debut over hurdles here and is a fascinating contender now switched to fences. Others to note are Harel Du Marais and Extraordinary Man.

WE GOT YOUR BACK was thriving before his flop over further at Leicester last time so is worth another chance back down in trip. Abaya du Mathan won off a similar mark over C&D in December and is feared most.

Back at Southwell, chase debutant SANGIOVESE gets the vote. Extraordinary Man is second pick.

15:07 Southwell Hunter Chase (Class 5) 24f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

Willewonga had the benefit of fitness on his side when runner-up to Eva's Oskar at Ludlow with MINELLA TRUMP back in fourth. However, Donald McCain's veteran shaped well before getting tired and has every chance of reversing that form. Percussion was a beaten favourite at Ludlow last time but he remains capable of being in the mix, while any market support for Linelee King would make him of significant interest.

PERCUSSION was close up behind a couple of useful types when third on his Ludlow hunter debut last month and might prove the answer to what looks quite an open race. Willewonga, Master Templar, Minella Trump and the returning Linelee King are others with good claims.

Belatedly returned to Southwell, PERCUSSION is taken to regain the winning thread. Willewonga is feared most.

15:42 Southwell Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) 16f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

JACK HYDE has shown plenty of promise in two hurdles starts to date and this appears to be an ideal opportunity for the seven-year-old to get off the mark over timber. Cobbler's Boy disappointed on his Rules debut but it is far too soon to be writing him off, while any market support for Syllabus or Surrey Lord would have to be noted.

JACK HYDE has shaped with encouragement on both his starts over hurdles and, with his latest form proving strong, he's selected to mirror his bumper exploits by making it third time lucky in this sphere. Cobbler's Boy and Syllabus, a fair and consistent maiden on the Flat, are a pair of interesting hurdling debutants.

The form pick is JACK HYDE whose latest race featured a notable winner and two subsequent scorers. Cobbler's Boy is second choice.

16:12 Southwell Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) 16f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

In a moderate event a chance can be taken with RONNIES RULES, who has unseated his rider on both hurdles starts to date but has more than enough ability to win this if putting in a clear round of jumping. Jack The Nipper is the main danger after his career-best effort last time, while Whatsyourproblem edges out Moonshine Man to be best of the rest.

MOONSHINE MAN was better than the result in a big-field Musselburgh handicap on his most recent outing, having helped force a sound gallop, so he could well be the answer back in maiden company. Whatsyourproblem stepped up on his 2 previous efforts for his current yard when fourth in a handicap here the previous month and should go well again. I Play County and Ronnies Rules' hurdling careers haven't started too promisingly but they shouldn't be written off given their bumper form.

16:42 Southwell Maiden Hurdle (Class 4) 20f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

LA PINSONNIERE was doing her best work late on when scoring readily over 2m at Huntingdon last time out and this promising mare could take another step forward with her stamina drawn out further here. Jasmine Bliss won over 2m5f at Ludlow last month and the daughter of Blue Bresil merits the utmost respect, while Jakana is also one for the shortlist.

This will likely rest between JASMINE BLISS and La Pinsonniere, with preference for the former who appeared to have a bit left up her sleeve when scoring at Ludlow and she remains with potential. Jakana and I Am The Moon are both talented mares in their own right but, chances are, they will be doing battle for minor honours this time.

If the runners with marks were in a handicap, LA PINSONNIERE would be conceding weight to the others so she is preferred.

(11) Remarkable Flight 40/1, Fair winner on the Flat for Charlie Hills but achieved very little when second of 2 finishers on Leicester hurdle debut in November. Subsequent runs in juvenile company have been far from convincing and stiff task from out of the weights on handicap hurdle debut.
Goes handicapping off a very workable mark judged on Flat form.

(8) Rhiannon Ring 6/1, From a good jumping family and finished runner-up sole start in Irish points. Has been slow to progress under Rules but did show best form to date when third of 12 in handicap hurdle (9/1) at Catterick (15.7f, good) 40 days ago. Lightly-raced and further improvement not ruled out.
Good third at Catterick last time; place possibilities.

(5) Roxhill 16/1, No great shakes in a couple of points and efforts in qualifying runs were underwhelming. Struggled on handicap debut when fifth of 11 in handicap hurdle (28/1) at Lingfield (16f, soft) 31 days ago. Others look better treated.
Return to forecast better ground looks a plus; possibilities.

(2) Je Viens Du Large 5/2, Easily off the mark in Irish points but handed a stiff enough looking mark, finishing fifth of 10 in handicap hurdle at Market Rasen (16.6f, good to soft) 27 days ago. Dropped 2 lb for that effort and cheekpieces applied but may still have a bit to find.
Chance partly depends on how well he responds to headgear.

(10) Eric Carmen 7/2, Course winner isn't the most consistent but made the most of a good opportunity to win over fences 5 days ago having found more off the bridle than usual in a race that was run to suit. Back over hurdles (3 lb out of the handicap again) and respected being the only runner to have won in this sphere.
Won over fences at Bangor last week; good chance off the same mark.

(3) Monteplex 66/1, Modest form at best in bumpers and ran to a similar level when second of 7 in novice hurdle at Kelso (16.2f, soft) in March 2023. Offered little in first-time cheekpieces following 22-months off and well-beaten on handicap hurdle debut last month. Tongue-tie back on but others preferred.
Needs to improve plenty on her two efforts this term.

(9) Sawpit Samantha 20/1, No real impact for Sam Drinkwater but fitted with a hood/tongue tie, she made more of an impact starting out for new yard when third of 11 at Plumpton (20.5f) last month. Never threatened (with hood removed) last time but no surprise to see an improved effort with that headgear refitted.
Sole attempt in hood resulted in her best handicap effort.

Interesting back down in trip, with improvement possible.

(4) Ici La Reine 10/1, AW bumper winner who shaped fairly well on hurdles debut in November 2023. However, she has failed to build on that in 3 subsequent starts and likely needed the run when returning from 9 month-absence for her new yard last month. Market should offer a guide to expectations.
Seemed to need her stable/seasonal debut run here last month.

17:15 Southwell Handicap Hurdle (Class 5) 16f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

TIGERS MOON shaped with promise when third on his handicap debut over 2m at Market Rasen last month and he looks the one to side with off an unchanged mark. Eric Carmen did it well when landing the spoils over the larger obstacles at Bangor recently and he merits the utmost respect back hurdling off the same mark. Rhiannon Ring is respected most out of the remainder.

In a very moderate race, TIGERS MOON appeals most having shown much improved form on handicap debut, particularly as he's bred to be much better than his current mark. Eric Carmen is the only runner to have won a hurdles race, so he's respected if able to back up his recent chase win, while Synchronist could be open to progress now sent handicapping.

Eric Carmen appears to hold a leading chance back over hurdles, while TIGERS MOON and Small Town Hero are interesting types.
