KATATE DORI started the new year with a bang on his chasing bow at Exeter, coming clear of the opposition up the home straight, and a 7lb penalty may not be enough to stop him from making it a quickfire double. Ultra Beat is likely to benefit from the extra couple of furlongs judged on his third at Warwick last month, while Shot Boii is capable of being in the mix too.

KATATE DORI took very well to his new discipline when making a winning chase bow at Exeter on Wednesday and can defy a penalty given how much he had in hand that day. Stellar Stream was better than the bare result at Exeter last month and is interesting back on a winning mark with cheekpieces re-fitted, while Shot Boii shaped as if his turn is near at Lingfield.

Katate Dori is the one to beat on his Exeter win but this is just four days later. SHOT BOII is one of several who need respect.

MAJESTIC FORCE made a pleasing start over fences at Cork last month and may be able to go one better. The point-to-point winner was also successful in a maiden hurdle over this trip at Punchestown last season and was only headed close home when bidding to make all on her chase debut with Irish Emery 13 lengths back in third. The selection's stablemate Lantry Lady and Fun Fun Fun were both successful at Grade 3 level over hurdles last term and are interesting recruits to fences, while Karia Des Blaises made an encouraging start to her chasing career when placed behind Only By Night in a Grade 2 at Cork.

The low-mileage MAJESTIC FORCE made a very promising start to her chase career when narrowly denied at Cork last month and is taken to go one better now. Chase newcomers Lantry Lady, a stablemate of the selection, and Fun Fun Fun both tasted success at Grade 3 level over hurdles last season and may provide the main opposition.

Preference is for the unexposed MAJESTIC FORCE, possibly unlucky on her debut at Cork with more improvement in her

MARK OF GOLD stuck to his task and capitalised on his rival's last-fence blunder when making a winning chase bow in a Grade 2 at Ascot 16 days ago. The eight-year-old makes grand appeal now going handicapping over fences and this looks a suitable opportunity for him to complete a brace. The biggest threat may emerge from Lord Of Thunder, who shaped well on his first completed start over fences when finishing fourth at Exeter last month. Classic Anthem is noted too.

Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell combined to take this last year, and they can repeat the trick with LORD OF THUNDER, who ran respectably at Exeter last month and remains a chaser to view positively with a first-time tongue tie applied. Mark of Gold, who took advantage of Personal Ambition's last-fence blunder to make a winning start over fences at Ascot just over a fortnight ago, rates as the obvious danger.

Topweight MARK OF GOLD made a very good start to his chasing career at Ascot last month and can make it 2-2 over fences.

Nowmelad bids for a third success over hurdles having been found an excellent opportunity at Hereford in November. That said, this would be the softest ground he has encountered and the vote, therefore, goes to CARISMATIC SOLDIER. Runner-up on his hurdling bow at Leicester, the six-year-old is entitled to be sharper for the experience and may take advantage of the 10lb he receives from his likely main market rival. Boston Boy has the ability to be competitive if producing a clear round after running out on his last couple of starts.

CARISMATIC SOLDIER made a promising start when runner-up in a Leicester novice and looks to have been found an excellent opportunity to go one better here. Dual-scorer Nowmelad appeals as the one to chase home Olly Murphy's son of Soldier of Fortune, with hurdling-newcomer Cornish Comedy and the unexposed Following Chapter the pick of the rest for minor honours.

Dual hurdle winner Nowmelad has a 10lb penalty. He also very few viable opponents but CARISMATIC SOLDIER is the clear pick.

ASLUKWOODHAVIT made an impressive start over fences when reappearing at Punchestown last season but was let down by his jumping in three subsequent outings. Hopefully those errors have been ironed out and it's encouraging that he's run well fresh in the past. Lazer Wolf showed the benefit of a couple of outings over fences when scoring in good style over 2m2f at Clonmel last month. The Gavin Cromwell-trained gelding had Kilashee and Silver King behind in third and fourth respectively and rates a greater threat than The Dara Man, who overcame a lengthy absence when making all at Kilbeggan in August but hasn't been seen again since.

LAZER WOLF proved a different proposition switched to handicap company when scoring in good style at Clonmel last month and looks one to follow. His stablemate The Other Mozzie is next best ahead of Aslukwoodhavit, who has a good record fresh.

Despite a 12lb rise, this looks a good opportunity for LAZER WOLF to follow up a comfortable win at Clonmel last month

Morning Air justified favouritism when making a winning hurdles/UK debut at Leicester last month and another bold bid looks likely. However, the form of that race could have worked out better and Venetia Williams' filly will need to improve to defy a 6lb penalty. With that in mind, it could be worth chancing RISK IT ALL to build on last week's third-placed timber bow at Kempton, where he showed clear signs of inexperience. Narragansett is also noted.

Despite failing to land a gamble on last week's hurdles debut, RISK IT ALL showed plenty to work on at Kempton, ultimately finishing third, and with progress on the cards, he could be the answer. Morning Air was impressive when winning at Leicester and is sure to leave the bare form of that trailing in her wake.

Preference is for French Flat winner RISK IT ALL, who can build on his promising third at Kempton nine days ago.

CLONDAW GENERAL wasn't at all disgraced when fourth in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham last month and more testing conditions on this occasion are likely to see him in a better light. Prophesea got off the mark over timber at Wincanton but will need to improve on that display against the selection, especially with Chris Down's gelding stepping up in trip. High Joker appears best of the remainder.

CLONDAW GENERAL posted a very good fourth in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham last time out and can resume winning ways back in these calmer waters. Chris Down's Wincanton scorer Prophesea should ensure he does't have things all his own way however, with Copper Jack next on the list.

Clondaw General has done clearly the most but PROPHESEA might just improve sufficiently now that he is stepped up in trip.

INTHEPOCKET was a smart novice over hurdles winning a Grade 1 at Aintree and made a bright start over fences on his reappearance last term. The selection was sidelined for nearly a year until making an impressive return at Wexford in October and his decisive victory over Farren Glory and Ifiwerearichman has been well advertised since. Ile Atlantique and Firefox showed a similar level of form over hurdles, and both have also scored over fences. Ile Atlantique easily made all over 2m4f at Navan, while Firefox also drops back in trip and may benefit from more forceful tactics after going close in the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse.

INTHEPOCKET showed no ill-effects of having been sidelined for nearly 12 months when bolting up at Wexford in October and, with further progress on the cards, Henry de Bromhead's 8-y-o is fancied to take this step up in grade in his stride at the expense of Ile Atlantique, who couldn't have been much more impressive first time up over fences at Navan last month. Firefox, who ran a cracker when narrowly denied at the top-level last time, rounds off the shortlist.

Having had only one run last season INTHEPOCKET showed total authority on his reappearance and has the makings of a top 2m novice.

A wind procedure worked the oracle for last month's Doncaster scorer JAX JUNIOR. Lucy Wadham's gelding impressed with how quickly he put his rivals to bed and a 6lb penalty may not be enough to prevent him from following up. As The Fella Says made a respectable hurdles bow when runner-up at Warwick 24 days ago and the son of Soldier Of Fortune can put up the most resistance to the selection, ahead of the hat-trick seeking The Bluesman.

Nicky Henderson's AS THE FELLA SAYS was an encouraging second on last month's Warwick hurdle debut and can make the most of the 7 lb he receives from previous winners The Bluesman and Jax Junior.

Bumper winner THE BLUESMAN won on his hurdle debut at Chepstow in November and could have plenty more to offer for Paul Nicholls.
Class & Speed Card

Having found two subsequent winners too strong at Carlisle, compensation could be on the cards for ILLICO DE COTTE. A 2lb nudge up the ratings looks surmountable for Dan Skelton's charge and he edges the vote over chase debutant Ballybentragh. The eight-year-old produced some decent efforts in novice hurdle company last season and he's entitled to strip fitter for his eighth-placed reappearance in the Gerry Feilden. Phantom Getaway is the pick of the remainder.

ILLICO DE COTTE has made a positive start over fences this season, making a winning return at Carlise before surrounded by subsequent winners when third there last month, and he can resume winning ways. Ballybentragh and Mahland should both come on for their comeback runs now going chasing and are possible threats.

Illico De Cotte has made a successful transition to fences but BALLYBENTRAGH could prove a potent force on today's chase debut.
Class & Speed Card

JASMIN DE VAUX was a smart bumper performer last season scoring at the Cheltenham Festival and the point-to-point winner made a successful start over hurdles when drawing clear in the closing stages to take a 25-runner 2m Navan maiden. The form of that race has been working out well since and the selection should be well suited by this extra half mile. The Yellow Clay is an obvious threat having completed a hat-trick over hurdles in a Grade 2 over this trip at Navan last month, while Butch Cassidy had Shuffle The Deck just over five lengths behind when taking a 2m3f Punchestown maiden. The latter has since scored here over a similar distance.

A cracking renewal, with the vote awarded to JASMIN DE VAUX, who was one of the very best bumper performers around last season and with his opening hurdles win under his belt, there's plenty more to come over this trip. The Yellow Clay finished behind the selection at Cheltenham but has garnered plenty of experience over obstacles and can boast a superb attitude. He's a big threat, along with Butch Cassidy.

With three hurdle runs under his belt, THE YELLOW CLAY has a level of experience that could make all the difference

Pertemps Final winner Monmiral improved from his return effort in a qualifier for the same series at Newbury to finish runner-up in the Long Distance Hurdle at the same venue. The eight-year-old warrants plenty of respect but he does face a stiff task against some interesting opponents with CLOUD DANCER getting the nod. The step up to 3m at Doncaster last time saw him take a big step forward and a 6lb rise doesn't appear overly harsh. Transmission bids to repeat his remarkable success in this event from 12 months ago.

A winner at last year's Cheltenham Festival and second in a Grade 2 already this season, MONMIRAL could have too much class for these back in handicap company. With rain forecast the conditions are likely to be testing and he's shown he can cope with plenty of juice in the ground, as has Transmission who landed this race when it was soft underfoot last year. Cloud Dancer is unexposed over staying trips and he can get in the money.

The ex-French 6yo LEMONCELLO displayed staying potential when keeping on well over 2m4f at Hereford recently and gets the nod.

The fitting of first-time blinkers could perk Gyenyame up after putting in an inauspicious round of jumping at Wincanton and it's too soon to be writing him off. JEFFERY'S CROSS offered plenty of encouragement when finishing third on his return from a 581-day absence at Windsor, though, and any improvement should make him tough to beat. Dual C&D winner Thor De Cerisy is also noted.

The Skelton team has taken things up a notch in recent weeks and JEFFERY'S CROSS can provide them with yet another winner after an encouraging reappearance third at Windsor after 19 months off recently. Thor de Cerisy was a dual C&D winner in the second half of last season, so he heads up the dangers returned to this venue, with Enjoy Your Life rounding off the shortlist provided he can put a dismal effort behind him.

Chase debutant CAPTAIN BOUDET ran a game race when placed in a big-field handicap hurdle here two starts ago and still has low mileage.
Class & Speed Card

The Willie Mullins/Paul Townend combination have dominated this race in recent years and may have the answer again with JOYSTICK. The Leopardstown bumper winner only weakened on the run-in on his hurdle debut at Punchestown last month and should progress from the run. Icare D'aubrelle has been very lightly raced since impressing in a bumper on debut here nearly two years ago but did make a promising start over hurdles in a Cork maiden last month, while Big Mike was second on his only point-to-point start and subsequently bought for 95,000 pounds. Fairyland Opera showed improved form when third over C&D last time, while point winner Trasna Na Pairce is another to consider after going close in a Fairyhouse bumper.

Useful bumper winner JOYSTICK gets the nod to build on a promising first effort over hurdles at Punchestown last month. Icare d'Aubrelle rates an obvious danger on the back of his encouraging first attempt over hurdles. Henry de Bromhead pair Trasna Na Pairce and Los Blanco and Gordon Elliott's Honesty Policy are interesting hurdle newcomers.

A course bumper winner in 2022, ICARE D'AUBRELLE may reward the patience of connections who have run him only twice in the interim

UNANSWERED PRAYERS won the Southern National on his penultimate start before following that effort with a decent third in the London National. The handicapper left him alone for the latest of those efforts and an ease in grade may see the nine-year-old back to winning ways. Dom Of Mary returns to the scene of his finest hour having won this by 10 lengths 12 months ago. Others to note are Minella Blueway and Jerrash.

Evan Williams' progressive MINELLA BLUEWAY is the least exposed chaser in the field and gets the vote with this first try beyond 3m likely to yield further improvement. Last year's stylish victor Dom of Mary looks primed for another bold showing and is next on the list, although Animal, Unanswered Prayers, Broken Halo and East Street are all worthy of consideration too in a competitive Sussex National.

Last year's winner DOM OF MARY (nap) is back in the cheekpieces which he wore for that comfortable victory 12 months ago. He's the pick.

VALENS BRUYEE just missed out in a conditionals' race on heavy ground at Ffos Las on his return to hurdling. He looks worthy of another chance with Callum Pritchard allowed to utilise his full 7lb claim on this occasion. Risk D'Argent finished a creditable third at Bangor on his seasonal bow and can feature again off his current mark. New Found Fame will likely give another good account, despite a 5lb rise for last month's success at Bangor.

There's a feeling one of the unexposed sorts will step forward, with the suggestion being DANGEROUS TOUCH after his promising fourth at Warwick last time. A market move for Harry Derham handicap newcomer Casual Observer would make him a potential big threat. Valens Bruyee and Alan de Banks complete the shortlist.

Handicap debutant DANGEROUS TOUCH (nap) displayed significant improvement when fourth over 2m in November and can progress again today.

GIANT HAYSTACKS showed promise on his first start for current connections when staying on into the frame in a 23-runner 2m Navan handicap and confirmed that good impression when opening his account in another competitive 2m4f handicap at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting. The booking of Conor Stone-Walsh adds to confidence, and he can defy an 8lb rise. Krabat is a generally consistent sort both over hurdles and fences and was a creditable fifth behind Farmers Lodge (won again since) at Fairyhouse last time. Miss Lia won a Tramore maiden in August and was having her first run since when far from disgraced switching to handicap company at Fairyhouse last month.

KRABAT hinted at a revival when a good fifth in a big-field Fairyhouse handicap last time out so looks the way to go here off a lenient mark. Giant Haystacks is feared most on the back of his recent Leopardstown victory, although Miss Lia, Dalmatic and Moylussa can also have a say in this open handicap.

A confident selection goes to the progressive GIANT HAYSTACKS(nap) who faces a much less taxing task here than at Leopardstown last week

I Shut That D'or has won over course and distance on two of his last three starts and beat Theonlywayiswessex on the first of those occasions. The latter has won here subsequently and there is little to choose between that pair on these revised terms, but SUN JOY is less exposed over fences. This six-year-old was having only his second start in a chase when runner-up at Sedgefield in November and a bold bid is expected from Ben Pauling's charge.

I SHUT THAT D'OR has won 2 of his last 3 starts (both over C&D) since switched to front-running tactics and he's sure to make another bold bid. Sun Joy left his chase bow behind when second at Sedgefield and is next best.

The lightly raced 6yo DIPLOMATIC ASH has shown promise the last twice and could be the type to benefit from the cheekpieces.

MAXIMUM OFFERS ran out of steam in the closing stages when third at Carlisle on his debut under Rules. The son of Getaway displayed enough to suggest he can win at this level and may prove tough to beat. Giantsgrave has joined Dan Skelton's yard after finishing second in a point-to-point in Ireland last year and is another to note, while you can also make a case for Limerick Lass.

GIANTSGRAVE fetched £92,000 following his runner-up effort in a point and, having been sent to Dan Skelton, he's sure to be very well prepared for this. He receives the vote in favour of newcomer Wannabe.

Carlisle third MAXIMUM OFFERS was right in the thick of things throughout last month's rules debut and gets the vote here.

LIGHT UP THE DARK gets the vote in an event where the market should provide some vital clues. The Camelot filly hails from a yard in great form and the 95,000gns purchase as a yearling is a half-sister to two winners. Test The Market also represents a powerful stable and appeals on pedigree being by Cracksman out of a winning Camelot mare. Harry Kelly has won this corresponding race twice in the past decade and Through The Storm has the advantage of a previous run when fourth at Hereford last month, while the booking of Finny Maguire on Good Eye may prove significant.

The market will help shape this but as things stands, LIGHT UP THE DARK, Test The Market and Chez Fred look the interesting candidates on paper and are preferred in that order.

Preference is for LIGHT UP THE DARK, given the stable's fantastic run of form over the Christmas perios and indeed prior to that
Class & Speed Card

BUCEPHALUS bounced back to form when finishing a respectable second at Chepstow last week. He could go close if able to back that up and is taken to edge an open affair. A winner at Lingfield last time, Snapius arrives in fine form and is likely to prove competitive once again, despite a 5lb rise, while Inferno Sacree is not out of it either returning to a shorter trip. Moab is the least exposed and is another to note.

A competitive 7-runner handicap. AGGAGIO could be the answer to this puzzle, having shaped better than his finishing position last time, so he's on a winnable mark if back on-song. Any market support for the selection would be significant. Recent runner-up Bucephalus and C&D winner Inferno Sacree both like to front run, and they can fill the placings and give Aggagio a nice lead into the race.

Bucephalus is tempting but this could go to SNAPIUS, who came clear with the favourite when winning at Lingfield last month.
Ths is the racecard key.
