(6) Rogue Rocket 12/1, Winner at Salisbury last July. Run best ignored (stumbled badly early) when last of 11 in handicap at Southwell (11.1f) 7 months ago. Not discounted on his return.
Disappointing on final two starts last season but perhaps a break will have helped.
LTO Selection:

14:05 Haydock Handicap (Class 4) 10f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

The unexposed MAGHLAAK shaped well enough behind a couple of rivals proven in testing conditions at Goodwood on his return and having progressed well last term, he can resume that forward momentum. Tamarama failed to fire at Windsor on her first appearance for Ralph Beckett, pulling too hard in conditions softer than ideal, but can be given another chance on a sounder surface. Spirit Of The Bay improved on her second start of the year and appears to be on an attractive mark.

MAGHLAAK was a dual winner last season and signalled he's ready to go in again when a promising reappearance third at Goodwood. Spirit of The Bay is on a lengthy losing run but should benefit from this step up in distance and is feared most off an easing mark, with Tamarama worth considering too.

The Charlie Hills-trained MAGHLAAK (nap) could be a lightly raced 4yo to follow and he is the selection ahead of Thunder Max.

Down the field at Goodwood; others preferred.
LTO Selection:

14:40 Haydock Maiden (Class 2) 6f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.

Any market confidence behind the George Boughey-trained newcomer Chic Colombine would be significant, but ALWAYS LOVE YOU shaped with plenty of promise when fourth at Windsor. The form of that race has worked out well, with the winner going in again since, while the second went close in Listed company at York last week. China Trade might prefer further than this in time but is sure to be fit and ready to go on debut.

ALWAYS LOVE YOU clearly knew her job and showed bright speed before proving vulnerable late in the day when fourth on debut in a Windsor novice (5f) last month. Very much the type to improve, she can build on that run and make it second time lucky. Chic Colombine and China Trade are a couple of appealing newcomers and may emerge as the lead threats.

The standard is set by ALWAYS LOVE YOU. Nicely bred newcomer China Trade is second choice.

(7) Scot's Grace 66/1, Fairly useful form without winning for Hugo Palmer last season and up against it starting out for new yard on return.
Below par on final two runs last year and has plenty to find even if back to her best.
LTO Selection:

15:15 Haydock Listed (Class 1) 6f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 1 race.

GALE FORCE MAYA has finished behind her stablemate Azure Blue on her last two starts but that filly is now a Group 2 winner and with this faster surface sure to suit, the Michael Dods-trained seven-year-old gets the vote. Get Ahead has only her second try over this trip after competing over the minimum distance for most of her career, and remains of interest. Makarova was ahead of the selection at Newmarket and further improvement is possible with that run now under her belt.

GALE FORCE MAYA showed smart form when winning twice at this level last season and this looks another good opportunity for her to add to her tally under a penalty back on ground which should prove more suitable. Get Ahead is feared most back down in class, with Kape Moss best of the others.

Gale Force Maya holds leading form claims but this could go to the 3yo SWEET HARMONY, who has shown sprinting potential over 7f.

LTO Selection:

15:50 Haydock Stakes (Class 4) 7f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

Just the one runner with any racecourse form, and SEVEN ACES may well be able to put that to good use. Slowly away at Sandown, she was never involved until passing one rival late on, but should have learned plenty from the experience. Amazing Winnie may be one of the better newcomers for a stable that has had four juvenile winners on the turf this year. Fallen Angel is another worth watching first time out.

A field of newcomers bar one so the market will likely prove the best guide in this novice, but as things stand FALLEN ANGEL is just about the pick on paper being by Too Darn Hot and out of the May Hill Stakes winner Agnes Stewart. Queen's Reign and Lady of Leisure are a couple of other well-related sorts to keep an eye on.

Some very interesting newcomers and preference is for MARY BAGOT, who is from a fine family. Fallen Angel is second choice.

LTO Selection:

16:25 Haydock Stakes (Class 5) 8f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

The formbook points to the chances of Zouzanna, second on both her starts and only beaten a head at Kempton in November. She can go well, as can Ithra, a length second over a furlong shorter at Yarmouth and representing the in-form Alice Haynes stable, but SUB ROSA might have the edge. Fourth behind subsequent Nell Gwyn heroine Mammas Girl at Newmarket on her only start, she was green before running into traffic problems and if she learns from that, she could make up into a decent filly.

ZOUZANNA sets a clear form standard on last autumn's runner-up efforts. Roger Varian's Sub Rosa is open to progress on the back of her Newmarket debut fourth last October so she's second choice ahead of Yarmouth runner-up Ithra.

The Roger Varian-trained SUB ROSA was a promising fourth on her debut at Newmarket last October and is taken to make a winning return.

Failed to threaten over 6f last summer but the step up to 1m could suit on handicap debut.

(8) Pearly Star 22/1, Wasn't beaten far starting out in a 7f Wolverhampton maiden last month, leaving the impression that she would improve for the experience. No real progress in 2 subsequent starts but in good hands and may do better now pitched into a handicap.
Not obviously well treated but open to improvement on handicap debut; watch the betting.

(6) Whatacracker 14/1, Encouraging signs when sixth in a Redcar novice on second of his 3 starts for Declan Carroll in 2022 but there were limited positives to glean from his reappearance/handicap debut at Beverley for new yard last month.
Well beaten on stable debut but may have needed it and yard is enjoying an excellent May.

Masterpainter

10/1(+17%)
(5) Masterpainter 10/1, Left previous form behind when landing a 1m Thirsk nursery last term and reappearance fourth upped to 1¼m at Beverley was a decent effort. However, backward step over 11.6f here recently and couldn't be sure that this drop back in trip will be the answer. Blinkers applied.
Won 1m nursery last September and could benefit from this drop back in trip.

(2) Mahboobah 14/1, Shaped well when runner-up on debut for Kevin Philippart De Foy at Yarmouth last summer but seemingly gone the wrong way since, making little impact on handicap debut at Wolverhampton (8.6f) latest. Now tried in cheekpieces.
Promising second on debut last August but unable to reproduce that form since.

(9) Fools Gambit 80/1, Didn't show much in handful of runs for Hugo Palmer at 2 yrs and sizeable step forward needed now moving into a handicap for his new yard. Gelded during the winter.

17:00 Haydock Handicap (Class 5) 8f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

AURORA DAWN is difficult to oppose after she strolled home over 7f at Newmarket and although she has to carry a 6lb penalty for that victory, she will go up another 5lb for future races so she is well-in. Masterpainter is the only distance winner in this field and although not at his best so far this season, blinkers are tried, which may help him focus. Pearly Star is a work in progress and is probably better than she has shown so far.

It's very difficult to look beyond AURORA DAWN, who did the job in good style on her recent turf debut at Newmarket and she's a step ahead of the handicapper under a 6 lb penalty. Perhaps Pearly Star will improve on what she has shown in maiden/novice company now handicapping and Hugo Palmer's charge gets the nod ahead of Pearl Eye for forecast purposes.

This is all about AURORA DAWN, who comfortably won a big-field handicap at Newmarket last Friday and can follow up.

(7) Dog Fox 1.75/1, Gelded following low-key 2-y-o campaign and duly left those efforts well behind on return/handicap debut in a first-time hood at Yarmouth (10.1f, soft) last month. 4 lb rise by no means harsh and should go close, provided he handles the different conditions.
Won at Yarmouth on handicap debut and this unexposed sort could have more left in the tank.

LTO Selection:

17:30 Haydock Handicap (Class 5) 10f Race Class Flow

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

Having been withdrawn at the start when a warm favourite at Nottingham on his intended return in early April, DOG FOX made no mistake when winning at Yarmouth later that month. Ed Dunlop's charge has been raised 4lb for that success but he remains unexposed and is fancied to defy the hike, with further improvement likely. Tremendous Times is one to monitor closely in the betting ahead of his handicap bow, while Wadacre Gomez heads the remainder.

Conditions here will be very different to those under which DOG FOX made a winning reappearance at Yarmouth, but it's likely that the improvement he showed that day was owing to the switch to handicap company, step up in trip and the addition of a hood, not the ground. If that proves to be the case, Ed Dunlop's charge should have little trouble following up here off a 4 lb higher mark. Edmund Ironside and Wadacre Gomez may well emerge as the main dangers.

Soft going may well have been against AL HARGAH in her first two handicaps and today's better ground could help her prevail.
