MAYAADA was far too green to do herself justice on her debut at Bath. Perhaps unsurprisingly, though, she took a big step forward to finish third when well fancied at Chepstow next time and any further progress might be enough for the Phoenix Of Spain filly. Timeforshowcasing overturned an odds-on favourite to make a winning debut at Chelmsford and remains of interest despite the 7lb penalty. Paul and Oliver Cole have a 50-percent strike-rate (2-4) with their youngsters this season, so Shotgun is well worth monitoring in the betting.

Interesting newcomer OH SO PERFECT is first choice ahead of Mayaada who holds solid claims.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 4 race.

Preference is for JOWALLA, who made a pleasing introduction when third over C&D last month. Tom Dascombe's filly did extremely well in the circumstances given that she was repeatedly short of room from the three furlong pole, and compensation could await. Jonathan Portman's Nottingham scorer Brisk Symphony enters calculations for all that more will be needed to defy a penalty, while it would come as no great surprise were Mohaather filly Uncertainty to have a say given her relation to a couple of useful winners.

Tom Dascombe's JOWALLA defied her huge odds with a highly promising debut effort here 16 days ago.

A host of in-form sprinters head to post in what looks a competitive heat, and only a tentative vote can go to THE BITTER MOOSE. Patrick Chamings' gelding has yet to score on the turf but he kept on well to fill the runner-up spot behind a well handicapped rival over track and trip last month. From an unchanged mark, he could go one place better. Rage Of Thunder won going away at Salisbury latest and may well be capable from 8lb higher, while others to note include Sisters In The Sky, Monsieur Patat and Thunderous Love.

This is wide open but RAGE OF THUNDER could have the most upside of the several runners here arriving in good form.

The chart reads from right to left to today's class 2 race.

SHAMAN CHAMPION might just be able to give weight and a beating to these rivals. Although that's no easy feat, especially for these youngsters, the Shaman colt made a big impression when successful on debut and he certainly wasn't disgraced when beaten four and three-quarter lengths in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot last month. Comic Hero left his debut performance well behind when a close-up third at Salisbury and any further improvement should put him in the mix, while Astrazar also merits a place on the shortlist.

The penalised SHAMAN CHAMPION showed a lot of speed when running well deep into the Windsor Castle but he should stay this far.

ABUNDANCE has an attractive, progressive profile and did well to overcome a slow start to win at Lingfield last time. He now makes his handicap debut off a mark of 82 and might be able to complete the double. Sea Founder looks to be learning on the job and has a definite chance lining up off the same rating as when fourth on his handicap bow at Haydock, while Silver Trumpet is another respected player. Following wind surgery, there was much to like about his latest second over 7f here.

Off what should be a good mark and after signalling a return to form last time, marginal preference is for CITY OF YORK.

Two of Henry Candy's three victories this year have come courtesy of Double Red, who had subsequent winners behind him when completing a Nottingham brace. Golden Phase went some way to atoning for a costly Lingfield defeat when going in at Salisbury, but CLERMONT FERRAND is expected to take the necessary step forward for the switch to handicap company. Harry Charlton's four-year-old split 88 and 89-rated fillies on her Yarmouth introduction, giving weight away, and although not quite at that level since, a figure of 75 would appear lenient. Throw last year's winner Giselles Defence into the mix too.

Last year's winner GISELLES DEFENCE and fellow C&D scorer Fast Steps hold very solid claims returned to Newbury.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
7th (5) (4/1 -14%)Westlain |
4/1(-14%) | (5) Westlain 4/1, Well suited by step up in trip beaten 3/4l off 66 over 12f at Lingfield last time; usually held up; trip a plus; step forward latest and more to come, major player if coping with fast ground Kept on for third at Lingfield and this longer trip is well worth exploring. |
The chart reads from right to left to today's class 5 race.

Tazaman and BELLATOR BULLET both arrive on three-timers, but the latter's form is stronger because he accounted for an upwardly-mobile subsequent winner at Nottingham. Alice Haynes' three-year-old has stamina in abundance and can continue on his upward curve. Jimmy Mark has hit the crossbar three times since his successful comeback at Bath and won't be far away. Van Aert's progression came to an abrupt halt at Sandown, but blinkers now replace cheekpieces.

The 3yo BELLATOR BULLET (nap) looks a progressive stayer, especially with the horse he beat last time raising his game subsequently.
Ths is the racecard key.
