(12) Unmistakeable | | | | | | 2 | Duran Fentiman | Tim Easterby | Half-sister to 7.4f turf/1m AW winner Revoquable (RPR 66); dam 7f/1m winner (100), half-sister to 5f winner First Bombardment out of 5f/6f 2yo winning half-sister to smart 5f winner Flanders (dam of 6f Group 1 winner G Force); would be a rare winning newcomer for the stable. |
(1) Blueandtangerine | | | | | | 2 | Billy Garritty | Michael & David Easterby | January foal by Time Test; 4,000gns yearling; half-sister to winners Mankayan (1m-12.7f; RPR 111), Koeman (1m3f-1m5f including AW; 102), Chorus Line (7f; 75) and Kjriel Note (Italian 1m2f-1m5f including 2yo); dam unplaced 1m-1m6f (63), half-sister to 6f 2yo Group 2 winner Infamous Angel; stable doesn't have many 2yos go in first time and pedigree suggests she may need further in due course. |
(3) I Can Boogy | | | | | | 2 | Rowan Scott | Nigel Tinkler | April foal by Twlight Son; 6,000gns foal, £42,000 yearling; half-sister to winners Spirit Of Applause (6f including 2yo; RPR 91) and Lady Lade (5f including 2yo; 83); dam unraced sister to 1m winner She's Gorgeous out of 6f 2yo winning half-sister to UAE 1m2f AW Group 1 winner Prince Bishop; would be a rare winning 2yo newcomer from the yard. |
4th (7) Marajito | | | | | | 2 | David Allan | Tim Easterby | February foal by Ardad; 30,000gns yearling; half-sister to 5f-6f winner Bay Breeze (including 2yo; RPR 92), dam placed 6f (72), half-sister to Group-placed 5f-6f 2yo winner Midnight Martini out of unraced half-sister to Group-placed 1m2f winner Sue's Surprise; something to like on pedigree, but stable has few 2yos go in first time; yard also runs Unmistakable. |
(2) Drifter | | | | | | 2 | Connor Beasley | David & Nicola Barron | March foal by Soldier's Call; 52,000euros yearling; first foal; dam fourth 6f 2yo only start (RPR 61), half-sister to winners Waady (UAE 5f Group 2), Hawaam (5f) and Pinwood (7f 2yo/1m5f); stable not a noted source of winning 2yo newcomers. |
(9) Money Pockets | | | | | | 2 | Luke Morris | Martin Dunne | March foal by Harry Angel; half-sister to 5f-7f AW winner Iesha (including 2yo; RPR 64); dam 6f AW 2yo/1m turf winner (83), half-sister to 5f 2yo winner Sun Ship and 7f AW winner Catbang out of useful 1m winner; stable hasn't had many 2yo runners, but did have one go in first time at Wolverhampton (16-1) last September. |
2nd (10) Naana's Diamond | | | | | | 2 | Kieran O'Neill | Alice Haynes | March foal by Invincible Army; unraced dam out of French 1m 2yo Listed winner, is granddaughter of US 6f-7.5f dirt/turf winner; yard can get one ready first time and interesting to see how she fares in the market, particularly in relation to stablemate Innocent Settler. |
1st (8) Miss Lamai | | | | | | 2 | Shane Gray | K R Burke | March foal by Mehmas; 90,000euros foal; 115,000gns yearling; half-sister to winners Seismic Spirit (US 6f/6.5f) and Spirit Of Camelot (Australian 5f); dam 7f winner (RPR 76), half-sister to 1m2f Group 3 winner One For Bobby out of 7f Listed winner; stable has a good record with 2yos first time out and market confidence should be heeded. |
(5) Innocent Settler | | | | | | 2 | Jason Hart | Alice Haynes | April foal by Sioux Nation; 16,000euros foal; 32,000euros yearling; first foal; dam 24-race maiden, runner-up 7f 2yo (RPR 77), half-sister to 1m1f 2yo Group 3 winner Flying Visit out of 7f-10.4f winner; tongue tied on debut, but the stable can get them ready first time; yard also runs Naana's Diamond. |
3rd (11) Solid Bond | | | | | | 2 | Harrison Shaw | Declan Carroll | February foal by Profitable; 15,000gns foal, 10,000gns yearling; sister to 5f/5.7f winner Swift Asset (including 2yo/Bahrain; RPR 90); unraced dam out of 5f Listed winning sister to useful 1m winner The Illies; stable not noted for winning 2yo newcomers. |
(6) Li Ban | | | | | | 2 | Silvestre De Sousa | Dominic Ffrench Davis | March foal by Prince Of Lir; 130,000gns yearling; sister to 5f/6f winner Straits Of Moyle (including 2yo; RPR 89), half-sister to winners Royal Address (5f-6.5f including 2yo Listed/US; 98) and Yahsat (5f 2yo; 90); once-raced dam (64) out of 7f/8.4f Listed winner; bred for speed and stable had a 2yo newcomer go in at Wolverhampton last week; interesting, especially if market positive. |
(4) Indication Ember | | | | | | 2 | Sam James | Grant Tuer | 22-1 when beaten just over a length into third of 15 in the Brocklesby at Doncaster (5f, soft) four weeks ago; possibly not a vintage renewal, but the fourth has won since and her experience will be invaluable with her opponents all newcomers. |
The market should be interesting with regard to the newcomers. Of that group the 130,000gns yearling Li Ban is interesting, especially with the stable having already struck with a 2yo newcomer this season, while the 115,000gns yearling Miss Lamai also represents a stable that often gets them ready first time. However, INDICATION EMBER ran well to finish third of the 15 runners in the Brocklesby and that experience should stand her in good stead.[David Bellingham]

(6) Mini Magna | | | | | | 3 | Cam Hardie | Antony Brittain | In good form last summer for Ed Dunlop, winning twice (5f/5.7f) at Bath, but in and out since, tailed off (well behind Moonstone Boy) at Southwell three weeks ago; others appear to have more potential. |
(1) G'Day Mate | | | | | | 3 | Luke Morris | Michael Appleby | 5f turf winner (yielding ground) in Ireland as 2yo for Jessica Harrington; improved on first three AW starts for Mick Appleby before finishing down the field in competitive race at Newcastle on Good Friday; may bounce back but must concede weight to some unexposed rivals. |
(5) Due For Luck | | | | | | 3 | Jason Hart | John & Sean Quinn | Raced only at 5f; won his first two 2yo starts on good ground and was unlucky not to complete a hat-trick at Chester (5f, good to soft) in September; looked a tricky ride when disappointing afterwards, including behind Curious Rover at Newcastle; needs to be revived by a break. |
(3) Midnight Lir | | | | | | 3 | Connor Beasley | Michael Dods | Two juvenile wins, latest in Hamilton nursery (5f, good to soft) in September; possibly over the top when finishing last on final start; will need another personal best to make winning reappearance but it's possible. |
2nd (7) Moonstone Boy | | | | | | 3 | Andrew Mullen | Iain Jardine | A model of consistency over 5f and ran another fine race at Southwell when second of six three weeks ago; shaped well on good to soft ground three times last spring; should be in the thick of things again. |
(2) Curious Rover | | | | | | 3 | Oisin Orr | Katie Scott | Steadily progressive as 2yo, winning Haydock nursery (5f, soft) in September and running at least as well off higher marks afterwards; subsequently gelded; up another 3lb but may continue his improvement this year. |
3rd (8) Winged Messenger | | | | | | 3 | Saffie Osborne | Julie Camacho | Poorly drawn when second at Chester (6f, good to soft) last September and gained compensation at Hamilton (5f, soft) two weeks later; now moves into handicaps and retains untapped potential; very interesting if fit after nearly seven months off. |
4th (4) Sergeant Wilko | | | | | | 3 | Shane Gray | Kevin Ryan | Came to hand early last season, winning C&D maiden on soft ground, and he showed he goes well fresh with a convincing success at Newcastle (5f, AW; easily made all) on reappearance four weeks ago; 7lb rise looks fair. |
1st (10) Kendall Roy | | | | | | 3 | Silvestre De Sousa | Miss Kate McGivern | Took a while to get the hang of things but he's thriving now; signed off 2yo campaign with win at Naas (5f, good/yielding) and followed up at Windsor (5f, good) on Monday by 4l under Silvestre De Sousa; well treated under a penalty; may be open to further progress and high on the list once more. |
Plenty of possibilities in a warm 3yo handicap, headed by KENDALL ROY (nap) who bolted up at Windsor on Monday and is much respected in his bid for a quick follow-up. Others to bear in mind include Winged Messenger who ended his 2yo campaign on a high, last month's Newcastle winner Sergeant Wilko and the reliable Moonstone Boy.[Richard O'Brien]

(3) Faris Flyer | | | | | | 3 | David Nolan | Declan Carroll | Remote last in two 5f runs this spring; can't be recommended. |
(1) Damisa | | | | | | 3 | Harrison Shaw | Declan Carroll | The only horse he's beaten in his two starts is reopposing stablemate Faris Flyer; this trip more suitable than the 5f he's been tackling but still no appeal. |
(2) Evelyn's Phoenix | | | | | | 3 | Duran Fentiman | Tim Easterby | 80-1 and dropped right away in a 7f novice (heavy) at Catterick on his debut 17 days ago; can't be recommended. |
(8) Scarfo | | | | | | 3 | Harry Russell | John & Sean Quinn | Down the field in two runs as a 2yo (6f and 7.5f); handicaps more suitable after this. |
(12) Moneypiece | | | | | | 3 | Connor Beasley | Michael Dods | Didn't live up to market expectation on her 2yo debut 11 months ago (6f, good to firm); today's conditions should see her in a better light but she'll find easier openings than this. |
(4) Georgie Wooster | | | | | | 3 | James Sullivan | Tim Easterby | 66-1 for his Newcastle debut 12 days ago (1m), offering some long-term promise; unlikely to be up to troubling the principals here though. |
(10) Capellina | | | | | | 3 | Cam Hardie | Michael Dods | Showed some promise in two Ayr runs over 7f last season but others have achieved much more. |
(5) Mysteryofthesands | | | | | | 3 | David Allan | Tim Easterby | Well beaten in one 2yo run but he offered more when third of 11, beaten just over 7l, in a 7f novice at Catterick 17 days ago; more to come and he looks the pick of his trainer's three runners. |
4th (7) Phoenix Of Dreams | | | | | | 3 | Jason Hart | John & Sean Quinn | 19,000euros yearling, 52,000gns 2yo; half-brother to winners Mogok Valley (6f, AW; RPR 78) and Star Of Burma (13.7f; 70); dam a 6f AW winner (80); makes some appeal on paper but he'll need to be useful to make a winning start in this field. |
2nd (11) Ghaihaban | | | | | | 3 | Jason Watson | Andrew Balding | Placed in her three starts and 7f on slow ground won't be an issue; looks sure to win races and she should be in the thick of it. |
3rd (9) Swift Storm | | | | | | 3 | Silvestre De Sousa | Dominic Ffrench Davis | Green under pressure when third of 12 in a 7f novice at Newcastle on his sole 2yo start (for Alice Haynes); the pair to beat him are both now BHA-rated in the mid to high 80s and the form has some substance; more to come. |
1st (6) Never So Brave | | | | | | 3 | Saffie Osborne | Sir Michael Stoute | Two runs last summer, finishing second in a Newmarket novice (7f, good) and a Nottingham maiden (6f, good to soft); both the horses to beat him went on to win in Group 1 company and he sets a demanding standard for his rivals to aim at; sire has plenty of slow-ground winners and his dam ran well on soft; the one to beat. |
Not many can be strongly fancied and although Moneypiece and Ghaihaban can go well, the two standout contenders look to be Swift Storm and NEVER SO BRAVE. Bumping into one subsequent Group 1 winner was unfortunate but having found Ancient Wisdom too strong on debut, Never So Brave then ran into Vandeek at Nottingham. He can gain compensation in these calmer waters.[Paul Smith]

5th (3) Rhoscolyn | | | | | | 6 | Jason Watson | David O'Meara | Three wins at Goodwood last season, the first two over 7f on soft/heavy, the final one over 1m in September; respectable third in this race on his 2022 reappearance but has a bit to find on the figures this time. |
1st (5) Shartash | | | | | | 4 | Luke Morris | Archie Watson | Classy 2yo, winning a 6f Curragh Group 2 and third in Group 1 National Stakes there (7f, soft); found life tougher over sprint trips for Johnny Murtagh last year, changed hands for 150,000euros in the autumn and new connections have gelded him and waste no time stepping him back up in trip; it'll be interesting to see how much strength there is behind him in the betting. |
2nd (2) Ramazan | | | | | | 4 | Oisin Orr | Richard Fahey | Progressed into a smart performer last year, winning a pair of 7f handicaps and narrowly denied in the Ayr Gold Cup (6f, good to soft) in September; showed he can do it outside of handicaps when close second in 7f Redcar Listed race on final start; leading claims if fully primed for this. |
4th (1) Baradar | | | | | | 6 | Silvestre De Sousa | George Boughey | Campaigned in handicaps in 2023, hitting a peak with wins at Ascot (7f International Stakes) and Doncaster (6.5f, soft); respectable fifth in 6f Doncaster Listed race on reappearance four weeks ago and this return to 7f is in his favour. |
3rd (4) Holloway Boy | | | | | | 4 | Sam James | K R Burke | Made a winning debut in the Listed Chesham at 2022 Royal Ascot; recorded another smart effort at the Royal meeting when fourth in last year's Jersey (7f, good to firm) but not seen again (gelded) until a well-held fourth in a 1m Doncaster Listed race (soft) four weeks ago; entitled to come on for the run and the drop back to 7f shouldn't inconvenience. |
A smart conditions event. RAMAZAN made good progress as a 3yo, culminating with a near miss in a Redcar Listed race over this trip, and he can strike on this reappearance with his yard going well. Baradar should be be better suited by this trip than the 6f he tackled on his seasonal return and might be the one for the forecast spot. [Andrew Sheret]
Race 5: 18:05 Thirsk Happy 19th Birthday Lily Watkinson Handicap (Div I) (0-75) (5) 4yo+ GB 6f
11th (8) Dark Kestrel | | | | | | 4 | Cam Hardie | Antony Brittain | Often misses the break, but that didn't stop him going close twice at Newcastle (5f, AW) in January; has had wind surgery (for the second time) since his latest poor run; relatively lightly raced but has enough to prove, including his ability to handle ground softer than good. |
8th (13) Dandy Spirit | | | | | | 7 | William Pyle | Roger Fell & Sean Murray | Most recent win, last spring, came off 7lb higher, and he probably needed the outing when ninth of 13 over C&D 11 days ago; handles the mud and may well be at concert pitch now; could be interesting at a price. |
6th (12) Rainbow Rain | | | | | | 5 | Luke Morris | Tracy Waggott | Had productive 4yo campaign, winning three times including over C&D; might have needed most recent run after four months off but the pick of his turf form is on good to firm ground and soft conditions would be a worry. |
3rd (4) Impressor | | | | | | 7 | Rowan Scott | Phillip Makin | Had a fine 2023, winning four times (5f/6f, soft/heavy); possibly needed the run when fifth at Catterick 17 days ago, and the usual cheekpieces return today; no surprise if he bounces back to form. |
7th (1) Society Lion | | | | | | 7 | Saffie Osborne | Ed Dunlop | Won a division of this race in 2023 (soft ground) off today's mark; in and out since, but 7f probably stretched his stamina on his latest outing at Wolverhampton early in January; has to be respected if ready to roll after 104 days off. |
10th (3) Music Society | | | | | | 9 | David Allan | Tim Easterby | Runner-up four times here and he begins the season on an attractive mark, but that's because he was 0-14 in 2023; no great record after an absence and others make more obvious appeal. |
1st (10) Cold Stare | | | | | | 9 | David Nolan | David O'Meara | This year's form-figures don't look especially enticing but he's much better on turf than AW; goes well at Thirsk and was runner-up to Society Lion in a division of this race 12 months ago (soft ground; off 6lb higher); one to take seriously with the cheekpieces (left off last time) returning. |
2nd (2) Slainte Mhath | | | | | | 6 | Phil Dennis | Katie Scott | Ideally suited by 6f on ground softer than good; solid reappearance when a close third of ten at Catterick (Mersea second, Impressor fifth) 17 days ago and again unlikely to be far away. |
4th (5) Thankuappreciate | | | | | | 4 | Harrison Shaw | Declan Carroll | Just one win from 15 attempts; begins the season off his lowest mark and handles the mud, but he often blows the start and his stable has yet to strike this year; others appeal more. |
5th (11) Secret Road | | | | | | 6 | Jason Hart | Tristan Davidson | Gained reward for his consistency over the winter when winning at Southwell (6f, AW) last month, and he's just as effective on turf; does not look overburdened by a 3lb rise. |
9th (6) King's Crown | | | | | | 4 | Connor Beasley | Michael Dods | Sole win for Adrian Nicholls came over C&D in May 2022; ended last season with two respectable efforts on ground softer than good; has joined a stable that excels with sprinters; very dangerous if returning to his best. |
12th (7) Mersea | | | | | | 4 | Sam James | Grant Tuer | Followed a fine second at Catterick (6f, heavy) by winning in a small field at Southwell (5f, AW; rallied gamely to lead again final strides) nine days ago; clearly in top form and should be in the thick of things again. |
(9) Huddle Up | | | | | | 6 | Callum Rodriguez | David & Nicola Barron | 0-11 for current yard but has been placed several times, including when favourite at Doncaster (5f, soft) in March; second in a division of this race last year; leading contender. |
A wide-open handicap may go to KING'S CROWN who has fallen in the weights and now reappears for a new yard that excels with sprinters. Plenty of the others have soft-ground 6f form. In order of preference, the main dangers are Cold Stare, Slainte Mhath, Huddle Up, Society Lion and Mersea.[Richard O'Brien]
Race 6: 18:35 Thirsk Happy 19th Birthday Lily Watkinson Handicap (Div II) (0-75) (5) 4yo+ GB 6f
(5) Miss Bella Brand | | | | | | 6 | Silvestre De Sousa | Mrs Ilka Gansera-Leveque | Multiple 6f winner, the most recent turf successes on soft last spring; now 2lb lower than the latest of them but well held on AW last month and now has headgear fitted for the first time in a long career. |
4th (13) Asadjumeirah | | | | | | 6 | Cam Hardie | Antony Brittain | Has won on good to soft but suited by good ground, as for his latest turf win, over C&D two years ago; well beaten on heavy here 11 days ago and has ground worries again. |
(12) Hurstwood | | | | | | 7 | William Pyle | Peter Niven | Not weighted out of it but soundly beaten in all three C&D runs and has yet to shine on his reappearance so easy enough to pass over. |
(10) Patontheback | | | | | | 6 | Rowan Scott | Gemma Tutty | Three AW wins at 6f and 7f but yet to win in 14 attempts on turf; has form over 6f on grass but this easy test looked inadequate over C&D last June and others look more likely. |
(1) Our Absent Friends | | | | | | 6 | Jason Hart | Tristan Davidson | Not in great form on the AW of late but he was suited by his first attempt over 6f on soft when a clear winner at Ayr in July and he's now back on the same mark; may well revive under suitable conditions. |
(6) Shandy Star | | | | | | 4 | Jonny Peate | Roger Fell & Sean Murray | Three 6f wins as 2yo, on good and good to soft ground, but her 3yo season was hard work; down a long way in the weights, though, and heavy-ground reappearance defeat can be excused; not entirely ruled out back at 6f. |
(11) Lord Abama | | | | | | 5 | Connor Beasley | Michael Dods | Came closest to a first win when a neck runner-up at Carlisle (6f, good to firm) last June, having looked as though this easier test at the trip was too sharp for him in a division of this race (soft) the time before; seems likely others will have the legs of him again. |
(2) William Dewhirst | | | | | | 4 | Paul Mulrennan | Ben Haslam | C&D maiden winner on heavy last spring; gives impression he has more to come as a 4yo as he didn't get an entirely clear passage when beating a fair yardstick over 7f at Carlisle (good to soft) in September; drawn on the flank and might need a stiffer test now but still considered. |
2nd (7) Harry's Halo | | | | | | 4 | Cieren Fallon | Kevin Frost | Won final two 6f starts as 2yo (good to soft and heavy); quite temptingly treated on best form last summer but he couldn't sustain it and failed to shine for the drop to 5f at Doncaster last month (favourite); first time in this headgear combination, has worn both separately; bit to prove now. |
3rd (3) Minnesota Lad | | | | | | 4 | Oisin Orr | Richard Fahey | Sole win in 5f maiden as 2yo (good to firm; after a break) but effective under today's conditions, having gone close at Doncaster (6f, soft) in August, and his AW run in November was encouraging; primed for a big run for in-form stable. |
(9) Blazing Son | | | | | | 6 | David Nolan | Bryan Smart | Good AW strike-rate and comes here in good form but just 1-19 on turf and not obviously ahead of his mark now returned to this surface; does have C&D form, though, and he shouldn't be far away. |
(4) Mereside Diva | | | | | | 4 | Callum Rodriguez | David & Nicola Barron | Has won two of six 6f handicaps, on good to firm and soft; up just 2lb for a Redcar win in October and she went well on her 2023 reappearance so one to be interested in with the chance of doing better as a 4yo. |
1st (8) Gulliver | | | | | | 10 | Jason Watson | David O'Meara | Top-class 6f handicapper on turf in his time but losing run on grass goes back to 2020; however, he had a shocking run in a better race than this over C&D in September (sole course start) and makes some appeal off 12lb lower back on turf; strong form on good and soft ground. |
The handicap door has been opened for Gulliver and he can be dangerous off this relatively lowly mark but OUR ABSENT FRIENDS had some good subsequent winners behind when successful at Ayr in July, which is the only time he's run over 6f on soft ground. Minnesota Lad, Mereside Diva and William Dewhirst are others who could be in the picture.[Emily Weber]

(15) Tessy Lad | | | | | | 5 | Cam Hardie | Sam England | Four Flat wins at up to 1m4f for Richard Hughes but poor hurdle form for new yard this winter and fared no better back on Flat (AW) last month; has a first-time tongue tie added to the hood he wore last time; plenty to prove at present |
1st (9) Two Brothers | | | | | | 6 | Billy Garritty | Michael & David Easterby | Successful three times last term, including at York (1m4f, good to soft) on final outing; weakened as if probably needing the run when fourth on his 1m4f Doncaster reappearance four weeks ago; won second time up last season; ground conditions fine; should go well. |
(11) Dark Moon Rising | | | | | | 5 | Shane Gray | Kevin Ryan | Won at York (1m4f, good) last July but ran a bit below that level in three subsequent outings last year; successful on 2022 reappearance but below par on previous attempt on soft; others have more pressing claims. |
(12) Strawman | | | | | | 7 | Connor Beasley | Gemma Tutty | Had a near miss over C&D last September and ended 2023 with an AW win at Newcastle (1m4f); placed off 2lb higher on soft on his 2023 reappearance; each-way claims. |
(1) Emiyn | | | | | | 7 | Harrison Shaw | Declan Carroll | Best known for front-running exploits at Chester; well beaten in this race last year and got to be a chance he's using this as a prep for Chester next month. |
3rd (3) Torcello | | | | | | 10 | Joe Fanning | Shaun Lycett | Front-runner; 11 wins, the latest in a three-runner contest at Pontefract (1m4f, heavy) 18 days ago; conditions to suit but he's in a much more competitive race this time. |
(5) Mr Le Philosophe | | | | | | 4 | Oisin Orr | Rebecca Menzies | Hard to get excited by his three hurdle runs since joining this yard but he was a two-time Flat winner in France (1m4f, good to soft/very soft) last year; tongue-tie off, first-time visor on now back on the level; a watching brief is advised unless the betting hints otherwise. |
(13) Roost | | | | | | 4 | Silvestre De Sousa | Ralph Beckett | Came home well to collect over 1m4f at Ffos Las (good to soft; handles softer) last August; not so good at Nottingham final start but it's of some interest that a leading stable has persevered with him as a 4yo; has had wind surgery; on the shortlist. |
(4) Charging Thunder | | | | | | 6 | Jason Watson | David O'Meara | Effective at 1m4f-1m6f with varied tactics; got near his best form only once from five starts last year but as a result has dipped to his lowest mark since the middle of 2022; has gone well fresh before. |
(6) Forza Orta | | | | | | 6 | Rowan Scott | Kevin Ryan | Suited by the step up to 2m when winning a competitive handicap at last year's York Ebor meeting; might have found the run coming too soon when well held in Old Borough Cup at Haydock (1m6f) 17 days later; makes his reappearance in this race for the third year running (creditable third in 2022 but below-form fifth last year). |
2nd (16) Fleur De Mer | | | | | | 4 | Jason Hart | Hugo Palmer | Has added to her solid AW record when placed at Kempton (1m3f) and Newcastle (1m4f) this year; hard to know whether she'll be as effective back on turf (three previous attempts were over much shorter trips at start of her career) but her stable's recent form is a definite plus. |
4th (10) Faylaq | | | | | | 8 | Paul Mulrennan | Jim Goldie | Creditable fourth on 1m2f Newcastle reappearance five weeks ago; that was a promising run but it's hard to escape the fact that he hasn't won since September 2019. |
(7) Arrange | | | | | | 6 | David Nolan | Martin Todhunter | Refused to race when cheekpieces went on at Ripon last summer but firmly back on the up without headgear in the autumn, winning over 1m3f at Carlisle (good to firm) and 1m6f at Catterick (soft) in September; good second at York (2m) final start; this versatile mare still looks feasibly handicapped if fully primed after six months off. |
(14) Kardia | | | | | | 4 | Callum Rodriguez | Edward Bethell | Low-mileage sort who won a 1m4f maiden in the mud last spring and showed her opening handicap mark to be workable when third of 11 over 1m4f at Newmarket (heavy) in November; hood worn previously left off; the stable won this with a lightly raced improver last year and a repeat would come as no surprise. |
(8) Fairbanks | | | | | | 4 | Saffie Osborne | Andrew Balding | Big improver switched to handicaps and fitted with a visor early last summer, completing a hat-trick around 1m4f in small field at Goodwood (good to firm) in June; not seen since (gelded) and his wide draw could make it tricky to get a good position but there could easily be more to come this year; it'll be interesting to see how much strength there is behind him in the betting. |
(2) To Catch A Thief | | | | | | 4 | Cieren Fallon | William Haggas | Promise on turf in the first half of 2023 and he returned from five months off to comfortably win a novice at Wolverhampton (9.5f) and handicap at Newcastle (1m2f) at the end of last year; disappointed on his hat-trick bid at Newcastle on New Year's Day but this low-mileage 4yo retains potential now stepping up to 1m4f for the first time on his return to turf. |
Ed Bethell won this with a lightly raced improver last year and it might be worth siding with him to repeat the feat as KARDIA should have more to offer after only four starts. Her Newmarket handicap debut third last November shows that her mark is fair and she won on soft on her 2023 reappearance, so there are reasons to be positive. To Catch A Thief (second choice), Fairbanks and Roost are other low-mileage 4yos who could have their best days ahead of them. The shortlist is completed by Two Brothers, who won second time out last year. [Andrew Sheret]
Race 8: 19:40 Thirsk Vickers.Bet Independent Family-Owned Bookmaker Handicap (0-55) (6) 4yo+ GB 6f
(20) Aclaim To Fame | | | | | | 4 | Oisin Orr | Sarah Hollinshead | 0-13 but has shown some promise, including on slow ground; returning to 6f should be in her favour and no great surprise to see her go well. |
(8) Ben Dikduk | | | | | | 4 | Sam James | Mark Walford | 13-race maiden; on a good mark on his best efforts but he was a well-beaten 50-1 shot on his stable debut at Newcastle in February; plenty to prove for now. |
(12) Fylingdale | | | | | | 5 | David Allan | Tim Easterby | Looked rusty back from a long absence here 11 days ago; on a handy mark but if she is to revive it's likely to be on a sounder surface. |
(19) Atrafan | | | | | | 10 | Jason Watson | Alan Brown | Eight-time AW winner; not at his best in that sphere in recent starts and opposable on this first turf run since August 2017. |
(4) Hailey Ya Mal | | | | | | 4 | Harry Russell | Antony Brittain | Lightly raced and well-related 4yo; has shown a modicum of promise on AW but forecast testing ground looks a worry now switched to turf. |
(7) Eldeyaar | | | | | | 5 | Cam Hardie | Antony Brittain | Came good last autumn, winning 6f handicaps at Ripon (good) and Catterick (soft); on the same mark as for the latter success and he showed ability remained when second at Southwell last month; a possible. |
(9) Elladora | | | | | | 6 | Aiden Brookes | Micky Hammond | Effective on testing ground and she's been running herself into form for her new yard this year; one to consider off a reduced mark now back on grass. |
(14) Irish Dancer | | | | | | 4 | Harrison Shaw | Declan Carroll | Hasn't beaten a rival in three runs in novice/maiden company, finishing weakly in both runs last year; wind operation could have a positive effect and this is his first realistic assignment; check betting. |
(16) Yaahobby | | | | | | 5 | Ben Robinson | Antony Brittain | Three AW wins to his name; best turf efforts have come on fast ground and the forecast underfoot conditions are a concern, as is his recent form. |
1st (10) Hombre | | | | | | 4 | Silvestre De Sousa | Joseph Parr | Modest eight-race maiden who hasn't progressed for the switch to handicaps; not unbacked in recent starts and the booking of Silvestre de Sousa suggests a good run is expected but he's not easily recommended on his turf debut. |
(11) Mr Trevor | | | | | | 6 | Rowan Scott | Ann Duffield | Took advantage of his much lower turf mark at Hamilton last September (6f, good to soft); still feasibly weighted on grass but he was tailed off here 11 days ago and need to see more before getting involved. |
(2) Kaidu | | | | | | 4 | Paul Mulrennan | Susan Corbett | Failed to win for Clive Cox or Archie Watson but he has snippets of form to make him of interest at this level; kept away from soft ground earlier in his career though; sold for 2,500gns since last run; best watched on stable debut. |
(17) Mc's Wag | | | | | | 4 | Luke Morris | Joseph Parr | First promising signs when second of 11 on heavy ground at Catterick last October (5f); has not kicked on from that on AW since but getting back on a soft surface can help and she's not yet fully exposed; yard among the winners; shortlisted. |
(18) Dandys Gold | | | | | | 10 | Jonny Peate | Roger Fell & Sean Murray | Veteran who was gaining her eighth career success when winning a 6f handicap at Newcastle in November; solid efforts in five of her last six AW runs; handles testing ground; should run her race. |
4th (15) One For The Ladies | | | | | | 6 | Billy Garritty | Michael & David Easterby | Not the easiest to catch right but she's capable at this level and she's generally run well since returning from a long absence last spring; return to 6f should suit and she's got each-way claims. |
(1) Smalleytime | | | | | | 4 | Jason Hart | Ben Haslam | Had dropped a long way in the weights prior to his 28-1 win in a 7f 0-55 handicap at Newcastle 12 days ago; 3lb rise still leaves him well treated on his old form but forecast soft ground is a worry. |
2nd (3) Enderman | | | | | | 6 | David Nolan | Paul Midgley | Infrequent winner but conditions suit and he ran a sound race after nine weeks off here 11 days ago; one of the likelier types. |
(13) Yazaman | | | | | | 6 | Kieran O'Neill | Paul Midgley | Losing run stands at 39 but he's competitive at this level and he ran a cracker when second over C&D 11 days ago; in the mix with a repeat. |
3rd (6) Stormy Pearl | | | | | | 4 | Connor Planas | David Thompson | Appreciated the return to turf when finishing off well for second in a better race over C&D 11 days ago (heavy); up 2lb but this should be run to suit and she's high on the list. |
5th (5) Langholm | | | | | | 8 | Connor Beasley | Michael Dods | Best known for his Catterick exploits but he's a course winner and made a pleasing return to action with a front-running second at Catterick 17 days ago (7f, heavy); should be able to grab the stands' rail from stall 20 and he's a strong contender. |
A huge field but not many make appeal. Enderman, Yazaman and Stormy Pearl ran creditably in divisions of a C&D handicap 11 days ago and should go well, while Langholm is set to make a bold bid with the stands' rail his for the taking if he fancies it. The claims of MC'S WAG aren't quite so obvious but her best effort came on the one occasion she's encountered slow turf and she still has a bit of potential after just nine starts.[Paul Smith]
